Seven years ago, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows came out and I managed, accidentally, to buy the first copy at my home town.
Accidentally? How did I do that? Well, the only bookstore we have is situated withing a shopping complex (can’t really call it a mall, it’s too small for that) that has three entrances. One of them is right next to the bookstore at one end, the other in the middle and the third one at the opposite end of the building. That third one is closest to where I live.
So, seven years ago, I left home a bit before the store would open, but thought I’d be there well after the most eager people would have got their books. I underestimated my walking speed and when I came to the building, I noticed that the security guard was just about to open the doors, so I decided to take those instead of the ones closest to the bookstore, like I’d planned. When I got in, I wondered why it was so quiet. Then I realised that those doors where the first doors the guard had opened. I quickened my steps and managed to go through the bookstore doors just as they were being opened. I grabbed the book and went to pay.
When I was getting my book back, there was a hoard of people coming in. They were the people that had been queueing outside. I actually knew the first person there, her face was a picture of shock as she saw me and asked me where I’d come from. ‘The other door’, I said and left, leaving her and her friend to be photographed and interviewed by a reporter from our local paper for being the first ones to get the new book.
I might have sniggered the whole way home.
My airline just sent me an email about my flights to London. It’s almost a month away, but I suddenly got a lot more excited again! London! Hurray!
Day 15 of July’s Book Photo Challenge - Oldest book on your shelf
I had to check, but it turns out that this book from 1947 is currently the oldest one on my shelf. Its name is ‘Myyttillisiä tarinoita’ or ‘Mythic tales’ in Finnish, and it’s a collection of Finnish folk tales and beliefs of different kinds of supernatural beings and occurrences.
