On the 10th of October, Finland celebrates the birth of Aleksis Kivi (1834-1872) as well as Finnish literature.
Aleksis Kivi was the first major Finnish-speaking writer, writing lyrical poetry, plays and the novel Seitsemän veljestä (or Seven Brothers) (1870) in Finnish at a time when Swedish was still considered the language of literature in Finland.
It’s lovely having friends you can talk with for hours and be all elaborate and eloquent and in the middle have sentences like ‘it was all euuuurghhhh’, and have them understand what ‘euuuurghhhh’ means and how it’s different from ‘euuuurghhhh’.
